Funding for $7M community and childcare facility at Pemulwuy secured
Following last night’s meeting Council now has a strategy to get the Pemulwuy Community and Childcare Centre facility up and running as soon as possible.
Construction of the centre has been delayed by a slow property market which means that the anticipated $3M Section94 developer contributions has not yet surfaced.
Another hurdle in the process was the state government’s Part3A takeover of responsibility for the Greystanes Southern Employment Lands which removed the obligation on industrial developers at Prospect Hill to contribute towards building the centre – with Council having to fund the $698,000 shortfall.
The plan involves taking the following steps:
- Making applications to state and federal government-run economic stimulus and community loan programs
- If the applications are unsuccessful, utilize Council’s $12M Future Fund to close the funding gap for the project to commence.
- Fast-tracking land dedications for the building site at Newport Street.
- Reimbursing our Future Fund with Section94 developer contributions in Pemulwuy when the property market picks up.
- Bringing back one final report to Council to make sure the facility meets community expectations before construction begins.
Despite all the adverse factors we have found a way to get the ball rolling once again. If everything goes to plan, that abandoned site on Newport Street will become a hive of building works and the residents of Pemulwuy will have a facility to bring the community together.
